Chapter 9 - THE WOMEN BEFORE MARIN
Callum contacted two of them.
The third declined.
He respected that.
The first, Natalie, remembered Lorraine contacting her employer after Callum ended the relationship.
Nothing illegal.
Just questions.
Did Natalie travel often?
Was her career stable?
Was she planning to relocate?
The second, Brooke, had a worse story.
Lorraine invited her to lunch and calmly explained that Callum would eventually inherit responsibility for the Kesler business.
Brooke’s “lifestyle,” Lorraine said, could become a liability.
Brooke broke up with him two weeks later.
Callum had spent twelve years believing she lost interest.
He sat across from Marin in a coffee shop when he told her.
“I didn’t know.”
Marin believed him.
That did not erase his blindness.
“How many signs did you ignore?”
“A lot.”
“So did I.”
They sat with that.
No easy villain.
Lorraine created the pattern.
Callum helped preserve it by refusing to see what made him uncomfortable.
Marin had tolerated Lorraine’s insults because challenging them meant challenging Callum too.
Everyone had contributed something except Elise.
The company review uncovered another pattern.
Investigator expenses increased whenever Callum considered leaving Connecticut.
Graduate school.
A New York job.
Brooke.
Boston.
Marin.
Lorraine’s behavior was not random jealousy.
It was containment.
Then Callum received a copy of one investigator’s email from five years earlier.
The investigator had written:
No evidence subject is financially dependent on Mr. Kesler. She could relocate without assistance.
Lorraine replied:
Then find out what would make him hesitate.
Callum read the sentence twice.
Marin watched him absorb the fact that his mother had studied his relationships as obstacles.
“This isn’t love,” he whispered.
Marin answered carefully.
“I think she loves you.”
He looked at her.
“I think she also needs control more than she respects you.”
That hurt worse.
Because it left no simple monster to hate.
The biggest discovery arrived two days later.
The current investigator’s complete file had been preserved on the company server.
Lorraine had given him a specific instruction about Marin.
Not:
Find evidence of an affair.
Instead:
Establish a credible basis for uncertainty regarding paternity before Callum finalizes Boston.
Callum stared at the words.
Marin felt nauseated.
Lorraine had not hired someone to discover the truth.
