Chapter 1 - THE ENVELOPE ON THE DOCK

Lorraine Kesler tried to rip four-month-old Elise away from her mother beside a freezing Connecticut river.
Marin caught the cream carrier before it struck the dock railing.
“Elise!”
Lorraine held the other side.
Her burgundy scarf snapped in the wind as she pulled harder.
“That baby is not my son’s.”
Marin stared at her.
Callum stood two steps away.
He did nothing.
Lorraine leaned closer.
“You really thought I wouldn’t find out?”
“Callum, help me!”
That finally moved him.
He grabbed the carrier, pulled it safely away from the railing, and set Elise behind him.
Marin reached for her daughter.
Lorraine slapped her hand aside.
Something slipped from Lorraine’s coat.
A deep-burgundy envelope landed on the pale dock boards.
Marin saw the hospital crest first.
Then the embossed name.
CALLUM KESLER.
Lorraine saw it too.
Her face changed instantly.
Marin bent.
Lorraine planted one pearl pump over the envelope.
Callum stared at his mother.
“Why is my name on that?”
“Old records.”
“What records?”
“Nothing relevant.”
Marin looked from Lorraine’s shoe to her suddenly rigid expression.
Five seconds earlier, this woman had been willing to risk a baby beside open water while screaming about bloodlines.
Now she was terrified of an envelope.
Callum pulled it from beneath her foot.
“Give it back.”
“No.”
“Callum.”
He tore the seal.
A dark medical image began sliding out.
Lorraine grabbed his wrist.
“Don’t look at that.”
He stopped.
Marin had never heard fear in Lorraine Kesler’s voice before.
Callum pulled the image free.
It was an old neonatal X-ray.
A tiny infant foot.
Two toes partially fused together.
Callum frowned.
Marin stopped breathing.
Elise had been born with exactly the same harmless webbing between the same two toes.
The pediatrician had told them it sometimes ran in families.
Callum looked at his mother.
“You knew?”
Lorraine said nothing.
Marin’s anger became something colder.
Lorraine had just accused her of cheating.
She had endangered Elise.
And inside her own pocket, she had been carrying evidence that made her accusation harder to believe.
Marin stepped toward her.
“How long have you had that?”
May you like
Lorraine looked at Callum instead.
That answer was worse than any denial.
