Chapter 5 - WHAT LORRAINE KNEW FROM THE BEGINNING

Callum obtained the complete pediatric record legally through his own authorization.

Lorraine’s copy had been incomplete.

His was not.

One page mattered more than the X-ray.

A note from the surgeon stated that Callum’s syndactyly appeared consistent with a familial pattern.

His father, Graham Kesler, reportedly had the same webbing before childhood correction.

Callum remembered that.

Barely.

His father died when Callum was twenty-three.

Lorraine rarely spoke about his body or illnesses.

But she had been present when Callum’s surgeon documented the family history.

“She knew this wasn’t some random coincidence,” Marin said.

They were sitting in Hannah’s kitchen.

Callum nodded.

“Apparently.”

“Stop saying apparently.”

He looked up.

Marin continued.

“You keep making her behavior sound accidental.”

“I’m not.”

“You are.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“You’re right.”

That was happening more often.

Marin wasn’t sure whether it reassured her or made her angrier that he could change so quickly now.

Callum placed another document on the table.

The private investigator had been hired by Kesler River Holdings.

His mother’s company.

The vague description was “executive-family risk review.”

Marin laughed bitterly.

“I’m the risk?”

“I requested the engagement file.”

“Can you do that?”

“I’m an officer.”

“So is your mother.”

“Exactly.”

There would be consequences.

By challenging the expense, Callum was no longer handling the conflict privately.

He was creating a company record.

That evening Lorraine called him nine times.

He answered the tenth.

Marin heard only his side.

“No.”

“No, Mom.”

“I’m not withdrawing it.”

A pause.

Then Callum’s face changed.

“You investigated Marin?”

Another pause.

His jaw tightened.

“You told me you hadn’t.”

Marin looked away.

She knew the answer before he ended the call.

Lorraine admitted hiring the investigator.

She claimed it was standard because Callum was a senior executive and Marin had access to family events, homes, and confidential conversations.

Marin had been married to Callum for five years.

No background investigation had occurred before Elise.

“What did they investigate?” she asked.

Callum looked sick.

“Your Boston trip.”

“Evan?”

“Yes.”

“My finances?”

“Yes.”

“My medical records?”

“No. At least she says no.”

Marin stared at him.

“Did she investigate Hannah?”

Callum hesitated.

“Yes.”

Marin stood so quickly the chair scraped the floor.

Lorraine hadn’t looked for proof.

She had looked for vulnerabilities.

Places Marin might flee.

People she trusted.

Old relationships that could be turned into suspicion.

This was no longer an intrusive mother-in-law asking an offensive question.

It was a campaign.

And someone had paid for it with company money.
