Chapter 13 - THE BOUNDARIES THAT COULDN’T BE NEGOTIATED

The rules were written down.

Marin insisted.

No unsupervised contact between Lorraine and Elise for the foreseeable future.

No entering Marin and Callum’s home without invitation.

No company money used to investigate relatives.

No discussing Elise’s paternity with extended family.

No contacting Marin’s relatives, employer, doctors, or friends.

No using family members to carry messages.

Callum added one himself.

No financial dependence.

He declined the company car permanently.

Declined the estate cottage.

Transferred the phone number Lorraine’s company had paid for since college into his own name.

Small things.

Embarrassingly small things.

But they revealed how much of his adult life still had Lorraine’s billing address attached.

Marin signed a lease on a townhouse in Old Lyme.

Callum did not automatically move in.

They discussed it in counseling.

He asked.

Marin said she was not ready.

He rented an apartment ten minutes away.

Lorraine called Caroline.

“He’s letting Marin punish him.”

Caroline answered, “No. He’s letting Marin decide what she needs.”

“You’re taking her side too?”

“I’m taking my own.”

Lorraine hung up.

The family system had begun failing because the people inside it stopped accepting assigned roles.

Caroline would not be the peacekeeper.

Callum would not be the loyal son.

Marin would not be the difficult outsider.

Even Peter stopped being the funny uncle after Marin told him exactly what his dinner joke had done.

“I laughed because I was uncomfortable,” he said.

“You made me the joke because that was easier.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

It wasn't satisfying.

It was honest.

The investigator’s company refunded part of its fee after determining Lorraine had attempted to expand the engagement beyond legitimate due diligence.

Kesler River Holdings’ board documented the misuse.

Lorraine remained wealthy.

She did not lose the estate.

She was not dragged away in handcuffs.

Accountability looked less dramatic.

Her authority narrowed.

Her children stopped answering on command.

Her granddaughter no longer appeared at the estate every Sunday.

The enormous house became quieter.

For Lorraine, loss of access was more painful than public humiliation.

Then Callum received one final document from the company review.

A handwritten note Lorraine had given the investigator.

Only one sentence.

If Marin becomes the center of his life, there will be nothing left of us.

Callum stared at it.

There was no hatred of Elise.

No belief in infidelity.

Just fear.

May you like

It explained almost everything.

And excused nothing.
