Chapter 12 - THE MOTHER WHO CALLED CONTROL SACRIFICE

Lorraine finally agreed to meet.
Not at the estate.
Caroline insisted.
They chose a private room at a restaurant in Essex overlooking the Connecticut River.
Marin almost laughed at the location.
Another river.
This time nobody stood near a railing.
Lorraine arrived early.
Pearl blouse.
Perfect hair.
Burgundy scarf.
Armor.
Callum began.
“Did you believe Elise wasn’t mine?”
Lorraine took a sip of water.
“I believed questions existed.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
“You were traveling constantly.”
“Marin wasn’t.”
“She went to Boston.”
“You had a report proving nothing happened.”
Lorraine set down the glass.
“Reports prove what investigators can find.”
Marin watched Callum.
He stayed still.
Good.
Then he placed the pediatric record on the table.
“You had this.”
Lorraine looked at it.
“Yes.”
“You knew Elise had the same anomaly I did.”
“It isn’t proof.”
“You keep saying that because it’s technically true.”
Lorraine’s eyes narrowed.
Callum continued.
“But you also had no evidence Marin cheated.”
Silence.
“You asked the investigator to create uncertainty.”
“I asked him to protect my family.”
“No.”
Callum’s voice stayed calm.
“You asked him to give me a reason not to trust my wife.”
Lorraine looked at Marin.
There.
The old maneuver.
Shift the triangle.
Marin refused it.
“Answer your son.”
Lorraine looked back at Callum.
Her face finally changed.
“You were leaving.”
Callum stopped.
Lorraine’s voice sharpened.
“Your father built that company for you.”
“For us.”
“For you.”
“Caroline exists.”
“Caroline never wanted it.”
“That doesn’t make me property.”
Lorraine laughed bitterly.
“You have no idea what I gave up.”
Graham traveled.
Lorraine raised two children while managing bookkeeping.
She handled payroll during recessions.
She entertained lenders.
Cared for Graham through cancer.
Took over after his death.
Then Callum wanted Boston.
To Lorraine, it felt like abandonment.
“You were going to walk away because Marin decided the estate wasn’t good enough.”
Marin almost responded.
Callum beat her to it.
“Boston was my decision.”
Lorraine stared at him.
That sentence hurt her more than accusation.
She needed Marin to be the force.
Because if Callum chose freely, Lorraine had to accept that her son wanted a life she could not supervise.
“What did you want?” Callum asked.
Lorraine’s eyes filled.
“For you to stay.”
“So you attacked my marriage.”
“I was trying to make you slow down.”
“You questioned my daughter.”
“I never hurt Elise.”
Marin’s chair shifted.
Callum held up one hand.
Not to silence Marin.
To tell her he had this.
“You pulled her carrier toward a river.”
Lorraine looked away.
For the first time, there was no explanation ready.
Callum leaned forward.
“You keep describing your fear like it gives you authority.”
Lorraine whispered, “I’m your mother.”
“Yes.”
May you like
He paused.
“That’s a relationship. Not a license.”
