Chapter 7 - THE PATTERN EVERYONE CALLED LOVE
Caroline Kesler finally came to see Marin.
Callum’s older sister arrived carrying soup and guilt.
“I should’ve stopped dinner.”
Marin let her inside.
“You did tell your uncle to shut up.”
“That’s not enough.”
“No.”
Caroline nodded.
She sat beside Elise’s play mat and watched the baby kick.
Then she said, “Mom did this to me too.”
Not paternity.
Control.
When Caroline married a teacher instead of the investment banker Lorraine preferred, Lorraine froze her out of family holidays for eight months.
When Caroline accepted a job in Vermont, Lorraine told relatives her husband was isolating her.
When Caroline returned to Connecticut after having her first child, Lorraine behaved as if the move proved she had been right all along.
“Why didn’t you tell Callum?” Marin asked.
“I did.”
“And?”
“He said Mom was difficult but meant well.”
Marin almost laughed.
Of course.
Caroline continued.
“She’s different with him.”
“How?”
“He’s the one who stayed.”
That sentence mattered.
Graham Kesler had built Kesler River Holdings from a marina, two riverfront restaurants, and a small commercial-property portfolio.
Caroline left the business.
Callum stayed.
After Graham died, Lorraine became CEO.
Callum became operations director.
Their emotional dependence became professional dependence.
Lorraine provided Callum a career.
A house on the estate.
Access.
Status.
And in return, Callum never fully left.
Marin remembered every time she suggested moving.
Lorraine found a reason it was impractical.
The market was wrong.
Callum’s commute would be ridiculous.
The estate had childcare space.
Why waste money on another home?
It had sounded generous.
Now Marin saw architecture.
Lorraine had built Callum a life where leaving her felt irresponsible.
Caroline pulled out her phone.
“I think this matters.”
Six months before Elise was born, Callum had interviewed for a position with a Boston waterfront-development firm.
Marin knew.
Lorraine supposedly did not.
Caroline had received a message from their mother the next morning.
Did you know your brother plans to abandon the company after the baby comes?
Marin stared at the date.
Lorraine knew about Boston before she began investigating Marin.
Then Caroline showed her another message.
Three days after Elise’s birth.
If that child changes Callum’s priorities, everything Graham built goes with him.
Marin felt cold.
Not:
I’m worried the baby isn’t his.
Not:
Something seems wrong.
Everything Graham built.
The paternity accusation had appeared only later.
A new possibility became unavoidable.
