Chapter 8 - Claire Used the One Power Margaret Still Needed
Claire had every reason to step away.
She was recovering from surgery.
Her marriage was unstable.
Whitmore’s politics had already followed her into a hospital room.
Instead, she made one irreversible decision.
She formally withdrew any standing proxy permissions previously granted to Ethan.
Then she notified the corporate secretary that her nine percent would be voted only by Claire herself until further notice.
Margaret called within an hour.
Claire let it ring.
Then Margaret emailed.
You are allowing personal emotion to interfere with company stability.
Claire forwarded the message to Helen.
She did not answer.
The practical effect came quickly.
Without Claire’s support, Margaret’s proposed amendments could not meet the existing threshold.
Without Richard’s authorization, the CEO appointment document remained meaningless.
Without Ethan’s cooperation, Margaret had no plausible way to claim Claire’s proxy had been voluntarily arranged between spouses.
Her plan stalled.
That was when Ethan surprised everyone.
He resigned from the internal CEO succession process.
Not from the company.
From consideration for CEO.
Richard asked why.
Ethan said he could not continue benefiting from a process that had already corrupted his judgment.
Claire heard about it from Richard.
She felt nothing triumphant.
Ethan’s withdrawal did not put her back in the hospital bed before the betrayal.
But it changed the balance.
Margaret had counted on Ethan wanting the title more than he wanted anything else.
For the first time, he chose something that cost him the title.
Margaret responded by attacking elsewhere.
She told two relatives that Claire was manipulating Richard while recovering.
She suggested Claire wanted to install an outsider as CEO.
She implied Richard’s judgment had become unreliable.
Richard heard about it within a day.
Instead of defending himself emotionally, he called an emergency governance committee meeting.
An independent board member would chair it.
Margaret would have to explain the CEO appointment document, the unsigned resignation template and the proposed amendments.
For years Margaret had controlled the family version of events.
