Chapter 6 - Margaret’s Oldest Fear Finally Surfaced
Richard confronted Margaret without Claire present.
He later told Claire what mattered.
Margaret did not deny creating the appointment document.
She called it a “conditional draft.”
Richard asked why his authorization section was blank.
Margaret said he would have signed eventually.
Richard asked why the corporate legal department knew nothing about it.
Margaret stopped answering.
The discussion shifted to Claire’s shares.
That was when Margaret became emotional.
For nearly forty years she had watched Richard build Whitmore Surgical Systems.
But the company had never belonged entirely to the Whitmores.
Thomas Bennett, Claire’s father, had been there from the beginning.
He had designed the distribution network that made the business profitable.
His shares passed to Claire after his death.
Margaret hated that.
Not Claire personally at first.
The arrangement.
She believed family control should belong to blood descendants.
Richard argued that Thomas had earned every share.
Margaret never accepted it.
Over time, the legal structure became symbolic to her.
Claire’s nine percent represented an outsider permanently capable of stopping the Whitmore family from acting alone.
Then Claire married Ethan.
Margaret initially considered that convenient.
The Bennett shares would effectively remain inside the family.
But Claire refused to vote automatically with Ethan.
She reviewed proposals independently.
Twice she sided with outside directors against Margaret.
One of those votes stopped the sale of a profitable manufacturing division Margaret wanted to liquidate.
That had been three years earlier.
Richard finally understood the resentment he had mistaken for ordinary in-law tension.
Margaret did not consider Claire a daughter-in-law.
She considered her an independent voting block sleeping beside Margaret’s son.
Claire listened to Richard explain all this from her apartment sofa.
It made the hospital insult clearer.
“You’re of no use to this family anymore.”
Margaret had never meant Claire’s health alone.
Claire had become valuable to Margaret only when Margaret believed marriage would give Ethan access to her votes.
Once Claire proved independent, she became an obstacle.
Claire asked Richard why Margaret suddenly acted now.
He had an answer.
Whitmore was preparing to renew a major credit facility.
The renewal created a narrow window in which shareholder governance amendments could be bundled with broader corporate housekeeping.
Margaret apparently believed nobody would examine the changes closely.
Claire’s surgery gave her another window.
