Chapter 11 - Ethan Learned That Losing the Job Was the Easy Part
Ethan moved out of the house two days later.
Claire did not ask him to leave dramatically.
She had her attorney send a practical temporary separation agreement covering expenses, access and communication while she recovered.
Ethan signed it.
His mother called him a coward.
His father called it the first responsible thing he had done in weeks.
Whitmore’s board placed Ethan on administrative leave from executive duties while reviewing whether his involvement in the proxy effort violated company ethics policies.
He had not created the scheme.
But he had participated.
The distinction mattered to process.
Not to Claire.
When Ethan visited her apartment, he did not ask for forgiveness.
He brought the spare house key.
Claire placed it on the table between them.
“You keep saying you were manipulated.”
“I was.”
“And?”
“And I wanted to be manipulated.”
Claire looked at him.
That was the first thing he said that sounded fully true.
Margaret had offered him a version of reality he desperately wanted.
His father secretly respected him.
The CEO job was already his.
Claire was the only obstacle.
Signing one proxy would fix everything.
Ethan had chosen that story because it protected his pride.
He admitted something else.
For years he had resented Claire’s nine percent.
Not because he wanted the shares.
Because Richard respected her judgment.
At board dinners, Richard sometimes asked Claire what she thought before asking Ethan.
Ethan had laughed it off.
Privately, he hated it.
Margaret noticed.
She fed that resentment.
Claire sat very still.
“You thought I was competing with you.”
“Yes.”
“I was your wife.”
“I know.”
“No. You know now.”
Ethan looked down.
The truth had made the marriage harder, not simpler.
If Margaret alone had been the villain, Ethan could have returned home as another victim.
He was not.
He had a blind spot of his own.
Ambition had turned Claire’s independence into an insult.
That belief made Margaret’s manipulation possible.
