Chapter 14 - Richard Refused to Give Ethan a Second Shortcut
Three months after the hospital incident, Richard invited Ethan to his office.
Ethan assumed the subject was work.
It was not.
Richard placed the invalid CEO appointment document on the desk.
The original.
The same paper he had pulled from Margaret’s briefcase.
“You still want this job?”
Ethan looked at it.
“Yes.”
Richard nodded.
“That answer is fine.”
Ethan looked surprised.
Richard continued.
“Wanting it was never the problem.”
He told Ethan that ambition could coexist with integrity.
What could not coexist with leadership was believing a title justified using another person’s vulnerability.
Ethan would not be permanently banned from advancement.
But there would be no private rehabilitation plan.
No promise.
No father-son exception.
If he wanted executive responsibility again, he would earn it through years of ordinary work under people who did not owe him anything.
Ethan accepted that too.
Then Richard did something unexpected.
He tore the invalid appointment document in half.
Not dramatically.
Once down the center.
Then again.
“That job never existed.”
Ethan watched the pieces fall into the wastebasket.
Later that afternoon, Ethan went to Claire’s apartment.
He did not tell her Richard might someday reconsider him.
He told her something else.
“I’m withdrawing my objection to extending the separation.”
Claire had expected him to fight.
“Why?”
“Because every time I ask when you’re coming home, I’m still asking you to solve something I broke.”
Claire looked at him for a long moment.
That answer mattered.
It did not decide the marriage.
Before leaving, Ethan placed the permanent house key beside the temporary apartment key he had already returned.
“I won’t come in unless you ask.”
Claire picked up neither.

After he left, she stood at the window and realized the choice no longer belonged to Margaret, Richard, the board or Ethan’s career.
For the first time, the future of her marriage belonged entirely to Claire.
