Chapter 13 - The Board Could Punish Less Than Claire Expected
The board review concluded six weeks later.
The results were frustratingly realistic.
Margaret was not an employee.
She could not simply be fired from Whitmore.
Her informal involvement in succession planning was ended.
Her access to internal governance materials was revoked.
The company would no longer use attorneys acting solely on her instructions for corporate matters.
Her proposed amendments were withdrawn.
Ethan’s administrative leave ended, but he did not return as executive vice president.
The board reassigned him to a non-executive operating role pending a twelve-month review.
His CEO candidacy was closed.
Not delayed.
Closed.
Ethan accepted it.
Richard remained chairman but announced something nobody expected.
He would not choose his successor personally.
Whitmore would conduct an independent external search.
Family candidates could apply in the future only under the same process as outsiders.
That decision cost Richard politically.
Several relatives believed he was surrendering family control.
Richard did not change it.
Claire’s nine percent remained untouched.
Helen drafted new protections preventing medical incapacity from being used to create broad voting proxies without independent counsel certification.
Claire approved those.
But one thing could not be fixed corporately.
Her marriage.
Ethan began individual therapy.
Claire continued physical rehabilitation and returned gradually to her own work as an architectural project consultant.
They communicated about practical matters.
Insurance.
House expenses.
Mail.
Nothing romantic.
Margaret wrote Claire a letter.
Claire did not open it for three weeks.
When she finally did, the apology contained no request to return to family dinners.
That helped.
Margaret acknowledged the hospital assault plainly.
She acknowledged using Ethan’s ambition.
She acknowledged trying to take control of Claire’s voting rights.
At the end she wrote:
I kept calling control protection until I could no longer tell the difference.
Claire folded the letter.
She did not forgive Margaret.

Some truths did not need immediate emotional resolution to be useful.
