Chapter 10 - The CEO Position Was Never the Real Prize
That notation changed the meaning of everything.
The missing authorization Richard noticed in the hospital had not been an oversight.
Margaret knew it was missing.
She intended to make it irrelevant.
The fake CEO appointment had been created for Ethan, not the board.
Its purpose was psychological.
It convinced him the promotion already existed and that only Claire stood between him and the title.
Claire’s proxy had not been necessary to appoint Ethan under existing rules.
It was necessary to change the rules.
That reinterpreted the hospital.
Margaret had not attacked Claire merely because she hated her.
She was panicking because Claire had still not signed the proxy.
The surgery window was closing.
Once Claire recovered and spoke to counsel, the document would almost certainly be rejected.
It reinterpreted Ethan’s silence too.
Margaret had spent months telling him Claire was the final obstacle.
By the time he stood beside the hospital bed, he believed defending Claire meant destroying the promotion already promised to him.
And it reinterpreted Richard’s unsigned authorization.
Margaret did not expect him to sign.
She expected to strip his signature requirement from the succession process before he realized what had happened.
The bigger truth emerged from the governance drafts.
Margaret’s real objective was not Ethan becoming CEO.
It was permanent control over Whitmore’s succession structure.
Once the Bennett safeguard disappeared and Richard’s founder authorization could be bypassed, Margaret’s voting block—combined with trusts she influenced—would dominate future leadership decisions.
Ethan was simply the first CEO she intended to install.
A son she believed she could control.
When Claire understood that, the entire scheme became painfully ordinary beneath its scale.
Margaret feared aging.
She feared Richard retiring.
She feared losing relevance inside a company that had defined most of her adult life without ever formally belonging to her.
She could not inherit Richard’s founder-class authority.
So she tried to redesign the company before he stepped away.
Her fear explained the plan.
It did not excuse the hospital floor.
The committee suspended every governance proposal associated with Margaret’s counsel.
It also recommended that Margaret be removed from all informal succession work pending a full board review.
Margaret stared at Ethan as though he should defend her.
He did not.
For the first time, she was the person standing alone while her son remained silent.
