Chapter 7 - THE SECOND PHONE
Gregory’s recording complicated the assault investigation.
Not because it proved what he claimed.
Because it showed more than he intended.
Through the appropriate process, Ashlynn’s attorney eventually obtained a copy relevant to the case.
The video began before Gregory swung.
That surprised everyone.
His phone had been recording for almost four minutes.
The first two minutes showed Gregory pacing while Ashlynn unpacked.
He mentioned the bank packet.
Ashlynn said:
“I’m not signing financial documents on our honeymoon.”
Gregory responded:
“You haven’t even read them.”
“I’ll read them with Megan.”
Then:
“You’re my wife now.”
Ashlynn said:
“That doesn’t make Megan disappear.”
Gregory moved toward the door.
Locked it.
Then the camera captured him picking up the bat.
His attorney could not turn that into a clean self-defense narrative.
But another detail mattered more.
At 00:42 on the recording, before Gregory picked up the bat, his phone received a message.
The notification banner appeared briefly.
DAD:
If she starts acting tough, let her. Don’t stop recording.
Ashlynn stared at the frame.
Megan did too.
“That does not prove Leonard told him to attack you.”
“I know.”
But it proved Leonard knew there would be confrontation.
And expected Ashlynn’s reaction to matter.
A second message appeared after Gregory missed the first swing.
DAD:
Keep calm.
The recording continued through Ashlynn’s disarm and palm strike.
Then Gregory shouted:
“See? Look at you!”
Not:
You hurt me.
Not:
Stop.
Look at you.
Exactly the phrase Elaine remembered Leonard using.
Ashlynn felt cold.
The camera had never been incidental.
Gregory wanted a reaction he could point at.
His father knew.
