Chapter 6 - WHAT $1.85 MILLION WAS SUPPOSED TO FIX
Megan Lewis contacted Atlantic Meridian on Ashlynn’s behalf.
The bank did not accuse anyone of fraud.
No loan had closed.
No signature from Ashlynn existed.
That mattered.
But a preliminary refinancing package did list Ashlynn as a proposed guarantor.
The information submitted about her assets was incomplete and partly estimated.
Enough to make the structure possible.
Not enough to bind her.
Ridgeway Marine Systems had a real problem.
Not bankruptcy.
Not yet.
Two expansion projects had gone badly.
A major customer delayed payment.
Equipment debt matured in sixty days.
The company needed to refinance roughly $1.85 million to avoid selling valuable machinery under pressure.
Leonard had already guaranteed substantial obligations personally.
Gregory had too.
The bank wanted additional strength.
Ashlynn.
She was not being asked to hand over $1.85 million.
She was being asked to put her own financial life behind that number if Ridgeway failed.
Gregory had hidden the distinction behind phrases like:
Routine refinance.
Strong year ahead.
Temporary support.
Megan asked:
“Did Gregory ever disclose the company’s financial statements to you?”
“No.”
“Did anyone explain the risk?”
“No.”
“Then you were right not to sign.”
Ashlynn almost laughed.
“I didn’t even know I was supposed to.”
The refusal carried consequences.
Without Ashlynn, Ridgeway’s refinancing became harder.
Leonard began calling relatives.
Gregory’s sister Brooke texted:
I know Greg messed up, but thirty employees shouldn’t lose jobs because you’re angry.
Ashlynn responded:
Thirty employees are not collateral I agreed to guarantee.
Brooke replied:
That’s cold.
Ashlynn looked at the message for a long time.
Then deleted nothing.
The family was already trying to convert her boundary into cruelty.
Exactly what Elaine described.
A business problem existed.
Gregory and Leonard had chosen deception instead of disclosure.
Now Ashlynn was expected to feel responsible for the consequences of refusing the deception.
