Chapter 10 - GREGORY DIDN’T FORGET HER RESUME
The major twist came from the rest of Gregory and Leonard’s messages.
Ashlynn read them with her attorney.
The first relevant conversation started three months before the wedding.
GREGORY:
She’s serious about keeping the condo separate.
LEONARD:
Elaine was like that at first too.
Then:
GREGORY:
Ash actually reads everything.
LEONARD:
Then stop making it about paperwork.
Another exchange:
GREGORY:
You don’t understand. She won’t scare easily.
LEONARD:
Everybody scares. Find what she protects.
Gregory answered:
Her career.
Later:
She thinks being a Marine makes her untouchable.
Leonard replied:
No. It makes her predictable.
Ashlynn stopped reading.
Megan looked at her.
“Do you want a minute?”
“No.”
She kept going.
A week before the cruise:
GREGORY:
If she refuses onboard, what then?
LEONARD:
Don’t hit first unless you have the camera running.
Ashlynn went completely still.
There it was.
Not an impulsive fight.
Not Gregory “losing control.”
Leonard had explicitly discussed physical confrontation.
Megan said:
“This needs to go to the appropriate investigators.”
Ashlynn barely heard her.
She read the next message.
GREGORY:
She’ll take the bat away.
LEONARD:
Good.
Ashlynn’s throat tightened.
Then:
GREGORY:
And if she hurts me?
LEONARD:
Better. Then you have leverage.
The whole honeymoon changed shape.
Gregory had never forgotten her résumé.
He remembered it perfectly.
The missed bat swing.
The blocked door.
The second lunge.
The camera angle.
His father’s texts.
Gregory had expected Ashlynn to fight back.
He wanted her to.
The plan was not necessarily to beat her into signing the guaranty that night.
It was uglier.
Provoke a response.
Record the trained Marine overpowering her husband.
Then use the recording to threaten the part of Ashlynn’s life she had built independently of him.
Her professional reputation.
Her security clearance history.
Her standing with clients.
Her identity as disciplined rather than violent.
The bat was bait and weapon at the same time.
Three clues finally fit.
Gregory’s obsessive questions about reflexes.
Leonard warning that Ashlynn’s career was what she protected.
And Gregory shouting, “Look at you,” after she disarmed him.
Ashlynn had spent weeks thinking her combat training saved her from Gregory’s plan.
The truth was Gregory’s plan had counted on her training.
