Chapter 1 - THE LOCK

The cabin door clicked shut behind Gregory before Ashlynn understood why he had brought an aluminum baseball bat on their honeymoon.
They had been married forty-one hours.
The ship had left Port Canaveral that afternoon, and the Florida coastline had disappeared behind blue water and white wake.
Ashlynn stood beside the open suitcase in a patterned honeymoon dress, reaching for sunscreen.
Gregory locked the deadbolt.
She looked over.
“What are you doing?”
He lifted the bat.
For half a second, Ashlynn waited for the joke.
There wasn’t one.
Gregory swung hard toward her ribs.
Ashlynn twisted backward.
The bat missed by inches and struck the upholstered edge of a chair.
“Wives learn obedience.”
The sentence frightened her more than the swing.
Not because she believed him.
Because he sounded rehearsed.
Gregory recovered and moved between her and the cabin door.
Ashlynn stopped retreating.
Something in her face changed.
Years earlier, before leaving the Marine Corps, Staff Sergeant Ashlynn Cole had spent three years teaching hand-to-hand combat fundamentals to Marines who were stronger, heavier, younger, and frequently convinced strength would solve everything.
Gregory knew she had served.
He had always treated the combat-instructor part like an amusing résumé detail.
At least she thought he had.
He lunged again.
One hand grabbed her shoulder.
The other raised the bat.
“Dad taught me this.”
Ashlynn caught his wrist with both hands.
Gregory drove forward.
She didn’t.
His expression changed.
Ashlynn rotated his wrist, stepped outside his balance, stripped the bat from his hand, and drove her open palm into his upper chest.
Gregory staggered backward against the cabin wall.
“You picked wrong.”
His arrogance disappeared.
For the first time, he looked at his wife as if he had married a stranger.
“Who are you?”
Ashlynn lowered the bat into a controlled defensive position.
“The woman you just tried to hit.”
Gregory’s eyes moved toward the dresser.
Ashlynn followed them.
His phone was propped upright beside a lamp.
Camera facing the room.
A small red recording indicator glowed on the screen.
Gregory lunged for it.
Ashlynn stepped between him and the dresser.

And suddenly the question was no longer why her husband had attacked her.
It was why he had wanted the attack recorded.
