Chapter 12 - WHAT GREGORY WAS REALLY TRYING TO PROTECT

Gregory asked for a mediated conversation.
Ashlynn agreed because financial issues in the divorce still required decisions.
They met in Jacksonville with attorneys present.
Gregory had lost weight.
His confidence looked thinner too.
Ashlynn felt nothing cinematic.
No desire to slap him.
No sudden tenderness.
Mostly fatigue.
She asked one question before the financial discussion began.
“Why the camera?”
Gregory looked at his attorney.
Then at Ashlynn.
“You already know.”
“I know the messages.”
He lowered his eyes.
“I thought if you saw yourself on video, you’d calm down.”
Ashlynn almost laughed.
“Calm down enough to sign?”
“Yes.”
At least the lie had finally become too small to hide behind.
“You knew I’d take the bat.”
“I thought you would.”
“You knew your first swing might miss.”
He said nothing.
“Was it supposed to?”
His expression changed.
Ashlynn understood.
Not necessarily.
That mattered.
The plan involved real danger even if Gregory imagined himself controlling it.
“What were you protecting?” she asked.
“Ridgeway.”
“No.”
Gregory looked at her.
“Your father still has Ridgeway.”
He exhaled.
“My whole life was tied to it.”
“That isn’t the same thing.”
“I put everything into that company.”
“You put sixty thousand into it.”
“I put twelve years into it.”
There.
The deeper answer.
Gregory had spent his adult life trying to become Leonard’s chosen successor.
Leonard measured competence in control.
Deals closed.
Employees obeyed.
Family sacrificed.
Weakness stayed private.
Ashlynn’s refusal threatened more than refinancing.
If Gregory could not persuade his own wife to support Ridgeway, Leonard would see him as weak.
“I couldn’t go back to Dad and say you said no.”
Ashlynn stared.
“You attacked me because you were afraid your father would think you couldn’t control your wife.”
Gregory’s eyes reddened.
“Yes.”
The answer was pathetic.
That did not make it harmless.
Ashlynn sat back.
“Then you didn’t marry me as a partner.”
Gregory looked at her.
“I loved you.”
“I believe you.”
That surprised him.
She continued.
“You just thought love came with authority.”
He started crying.
Ashlynn did not.
For the first time, she understood there could be love inside an abusive structure.
May you like
That did not redeem the structure.
It made recognizing it more important.
