Chapter 8 - The Decision That Could Bankrupt Them
The forensic accountants confirmed that at least $2.3 million had circulated through related entities over eighteen months.
Some transfers were legitimate reimbursements.
Others temporarily filled gaps before lender reporting dates.
The accounting firm could not yet determine whether every transaction was fraudulent.
It did determine that my certification had been fabricated.
The metadata showed it was uploaded from Victor’s laptop.
That protected my license.
It did not protect the company.
The lender demanded updated financials, suspended new draws, and required Hale Urban to deposit additional equity before construction could resume.
Without it, the River North project might default.
Raul had enough retirement assets to cover part of the shortfall.
Helena owned a debt-free home in Lake Forest.
Victor asked both parents to pledge everything.
They refused.
For years, they had told employees, lenders, and me that Hale Urban was a family legacy.
Now legacy had a price.
I faced my own irreversible choice.
The lender offered to treat me as a cooperating witness in its internal review if I provided a complete account of every certification process I had participated in.
That meant admitting I had previously approved weak internal controls.
I had noticed unusual transfers months earlier.
I accepted Victor’s explanations because challenging him created conflict at home.
I had not forged anything.
I had not taken money.
But I had allowed a family company to substitute trust for controls while I carried a professional title that suggested the opposite.
I signed the cooperation agreement.
It could damage my reputation.
It could also prevent Victor from making my silence part of his defense.
When he learned, he stopped requesting reconciliation through attorneys.
He filed for divorce.
He also requested future joint custody of our unborn child.
Denise reminded me that filing a request did not mean receiving it.
“We prepare for the child who will actually be born,” she said. “Not the argument he wants today.”
That evening, Helena sent me a message through her lawyer.
If I withdrew my financial statement, she would testify that Victor had acted alone during the assault.
I read the offer twice.
She was willing to sacrifice her son to protect the company.
