Chapter 10 - The Company Created With My Name
The company was called Bennett Property Analytics.
My maiden name was Claire Bennett.
I had never created it.
The LLC was formed fourteen months earlier using my Social Security number, an electronic copy of my driver’s license, and a signature taken from an old tax authorization.
Victor used it to receive $460,000 from Hale Urban.
Most of the money later moved elsewhere.
On paper, I looked like a participant.
The discovery explained why Victor had become increasingly confident when I threatened to report the transfers.
He believed he had already built my guilt into the records.
Three earlier clues changed meaning at once.
He repeatedly insisted I sign documents electronically instead of by hand because he had a library of my digital signatures.
He discouraged me from checking our home mail because business notices addressed to Bennett Property Analytics occasionally arrived there.
And he wanted Nora to record me behaving “unstably” because financial evidence alone might not explain why I suddenly denied owning a company bearing my name.
The plan was not created the morning he attacked me.
The assault happened because a longer plan began failing.
Victor had designed an escape route.
If the project collapsed, he could claim his controller-wife had redirected money through her own company.
If the project survived, the entity could be quietly dissolved.
My pregnancy changed his timing.
I had begun insisting on reduced work before maternity leave and planned to hand reporting responsibilities to an outside controller.
Fresh eyes would have found Bennett Property Analytics.
Victor needed my certification before that happened.
I felt physically sick when Rebecca explained it.
Not because the forgery was convincing.
Because I understood how long my marriage had existed beside it.
Helena claimed she had never heard of the company.
Raul said the same.
Nora remembered Victor joking months earlier that “Claire finally has her own consultancy.”
She assumed I knew.
The major twist did not reveal a secret mastermind above Victor.
It revealed the purpose of his control.
He had spent more than a year turning my credibility into the company’s emergency exit.
Now investigators needed to determine who else knew.
Nora produced an old group message.
Helena had responded to Victor’s consultancy joke.
