Chapter 3 - The Family Version Arrived Before I Did
Northwestern Memorial admitted me for observation.
The baby’s heartbeat remained steady, but I had abdominal bruising, dehydration, and contractions strong enough that the obstetric team wanted me monitored overnight.
Before I reached a private room, Helena had already called my mother.
According to her version, I had suffered a pregnancy-related emotional episode and attacked Victor after accusing his company of fraud.
Raul told two business partners that I was mentally unstable.
Nora posted nothing publicly.
That silence interested me.
Victor was removed from the hospital after trying to enter my room despite my request that he stay away.
A social worker helped me document the assault and discussed a protection order.
A Chicago police detective took my statement separately.
He did not promise an immediate arrest.
He photographed the bruising, requested the building incident records, and told me the phone Nora used might become important if it contained relevant footage.
“Will she give it to you?” I asked.
“We’ll ask.”
I almost laughed.
Nora had spent the entire morning recording me while Helena laughed.
She was not going to volunteer evidence.
Alex sat beside my bed.
“Do you want the folder back?”
“Keep it.”
He nodded.
For twenty years, Alex had been the cautious one. I had been the sister who believed difficult people could be managed with enough patience.
I had managed Victor for eleven years.
When he punched holes in drywall, I called it stress.
When he checked my bank statements, I called it being organized.
When he refused to let me visit Alex after arguments, I called it marriage tension.
The violence had not started that morning.
Only the excuses had ended.
My next problem arrived through my work email.
Victor had suspended my access to Hale Urban Properties.
The notice said I was being placed on administrative leave for “health-related concerns affecting professional judgment.”
An hour later, the lender financing the River North project emailed me directly.
They had received the quarterly certification.
