Chapter 4 - The Signature That Could Cost Me Everything

The forged certification changed the danger.

The assault was personal.

The document could destroy my career.

I was a CPA. My signature told a lender that millions of dollars in construction draws had been used according to contract.

If that certification was false, the bank would not begin by assuming my husband forced me.

It would begin by asking whether I participated.

Alex contacted Rebecca Sloan, a white-collar attorney he knew through his engineering firm.

Rebecca came to the hospital that afternoon.

Her first instruction was simple.

“Do not access company systems you are no longer authorized to access. Preserve what you already have. Do not improve your evidence.”

That sounded almost insulting until she explained why.

Victor would likely accuse me of altering records after our marital conflict.

The cleaner my conduct remained, the harder that accusation became.

She contacted Hale Urban’s lender and stated only that I disputed the authenticity of my signature and requested preservation of the original submission data.

That single notification had immediate consequences.

The lender suspended future construction draws.

Payroll was still available, but several subcontractor payments stopped.

Victor called Alex.

“You just froze a forty-million-dollar development over a domestic argument.”

Alex handed the phone to Rebecca.

She said, “Mr. Hale, direct all communication through counsel.”

Victor hung up.

By evening, Helena began contacting investors.

She told them I was trying to destroy the company because Victor wanted a divorce.

I had never heard him mention divorce.

Apparently he needed everyone to believe I was acting from revenge before anyone reviewed the numbers.

I signed a temporary protection-order petition.

I also redirected my salary from our joint account into a new account in my name.

The cost became obvious immediately.

Victor canceled my access to the family health-savings account and froze our shared credit card.

He could not cancel my medical insurance without formal changes, but he could make everyday life difficult.

I was pregnant, hospitalized, separated from my home, and suddenly unsure how much personal money remained available.

Then Alex opened the navy folder.

One document was missing.

The North Shore Asset Recovery statement.

I knew I had printed it.

Alex remembered seeing it on his kitchen table.

There was only one other person who had been in his apartment that night.

Nora.
