Chapter 9 - WHEN AN AFFAIR BECAME EVERYONE’S FAMILY PROBLEM
Ethan had tried to keep the affair contained for three years.
Now both families knew.
Not the sanitized version.
The whole ugly shape.
His parents learned Rachel had continued contacting him.
Laura’s mother learned Laura had secretly met Rachel.
Ethan’s sister learned he once considered leaving Laura during the pregnancy.
Thanksgiving plans collapsed before November arrived.
Friends took sides without being asked.
One person told Ethan:
“If Laura let that woman near Sophia, I'd be done.”
Another told Laura:
“He cheated first. Everything after that is on him.”
Both statements were emotionally satisfying.
Neither was useful.
Ethan refused the first.
Laura refused the second.
Sophia continued splitting time between them.
She began asking whether Mommy and Daddy still lived together.
Ethan answered:
“Not right now.”
“Because Rachel?”
He looked toward Laura during the video call.
“No, sweetheart. Because Mommy and Daddy have grown-up things to fix.”
That sentence mattered.
They would not give Rachel ownership of every consequence.
Meanwhile, Laura discovered Rachel had also contacted Ethan’s employer months earlier.
She implied Ethan used company travel during their affair.
That allegation was partly true.
Years ago, he had extended two legitimate business trips for personal meetings with Rachel.
Ethan had never disclosed that during the company’s internal ethics review after the affair became known privately.
His employer reopened the matter.
Ethan could face professional discipline.
Laura was shocked.
“You never told me there had been an internal review.”
“I was cleared of using company money.”
“That wasn't my question.”
“No.”
Another omission.
Smaller than an affair.
Still part of the same instinct.
Hide whatever might produce the outcome he feared.
Ethan rubbed his forehead.
“I don't know how to do this without trying to manage the damage.”
Laura answered quietly:
“Maybe you stop managing who gets to know it.”
He looked at her.

That was becoming the central challenge for both of them.
Truth was not something they could release only after calculating the safest consequence.
