Chapter 14 - THE LAST CHANCE TO USE THE AFFAIR AS A WEAPON

Eleven months after Rachel entered the house, Ethan and Laura met with their attorneys.

Not for divorce.

Not yet.

To decide whether their separation agreement should continue.

Their legal options were straightforward.

Extend it.

Reconcile.

Or begin dissolution.

Emotionally, none was simple.

Ethan’s attorney mentioned the house incident.

Laura’s attorney mentioned the affair.

For several minutes, the room drifted toward the old accounting system.

Who hurt whom more?

Who started it?

Who created the conditions for the next betrayal?

Laura stopped them.

“I don't want to negotiate our marriage like damages.”

Ethan looked at her.

She continued.

“If we divorce, I want it to be because we don't believe we can build something healthier. Not because my mistake cancels his or his cancels mine.”

Ethan nodded slowly.

They requested another three months.

No one celebrated.

Lucille complained that Laura was wasting time.

Ethan’s sister privately told him to leave.

Both ignored their families.

That was new.

Before leaving, Ethan placed a small object on the conference table.

The brass key with the dark-red leather tag.

Laura recognized it immediately.

The police no longer needed it.

Rachel’s matter had progressed past the evidence-preservation stage.

Ethan turned the tag over.

L.C.

“You want it?”

Laura stared at the key.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I don't live there.”

He absorbed that.

Then she added:

“And if I ever do again, I don't want to come back because you handed me an old key.”

Ethan understood.

A key could not represent forgiveness.

A house could not represent marriage.

Security hardware could not replace trust.

He closed his hand around it.

“What would coming back require?”

Laura looked at him.

“A new decision.”

Not restoration.

Not pretending Rachel had never entered.

May you like

Not returning to the exact marriage they had before.

Something chosen after knowing the full cost.
