Chapter 8 - LAURA’S MOST EXPENSIVE HONEST ANSWER

Laura could have protected herself.

Her attorney explained how.

Emphasize Rachel’s deception.

Emphasize that Sophia was expected to be away.

Emphasize Laura never authorized contact with the child.

All true.

But Laura insisted the full account include something uglier.

She had given Rachel a key without Ethan’s knowledge.

She had asked Rachel to enter the home.

She had done it because she believed secrecy would give her a cleaner answer than confronting her husband.

“Are you sure you want this phrased so directly?” her attorney asked.

“Yes.”

“It may be used in any future family dispute.”

“I know.”

“You and Ethan aren't currently litigating custody.”

“I know.”

“Then why create a record that could hurt you later?”

Laura looked through the conference-room window.

“Because I spent three years furious that Ethan gave me edited truth.”

Her attorney waited.

“I don't get to do the same thing because the full version makes me look bad.”

That statement became important.

So did Ethan’s response.

He reviewed it.

Made no attempt to enlarge her fault.

He added his own declaration explaining the affair history, Rachel’s previous contacts, and his failure to disclose them fully to Laura.

Their attorneys were surprised by both of them.

The marriage might end.

Neither wanted it to end inside another distorted story.

Laura also requested that Sophia begin seeing a child therapist experienced in family trauma.

Ethan agreed.

The therapist set a firm boundary.

Sophia would not be questioned about “what Rachel did” repeatedly.

She was three.

She needed safety, routine and language appropriate to her age.

The adults could build their cases from adult evidence.

That relieved Laura.

It also deprived her of something emotionally tempting.

Reassurance from Sophia.

Laura wanted to hear her daughter say:

I know you didn't mean it.

She never asked.

That became part of the price.

Sometimes remorse meant living without demanding comfort from the person frightened by your mistake.
