Chapter 12 - WHAT ETHAN AND LAURA WERE REALLY TRYING TO PROTECT

Their couples therapist asked them one question.
“What were you protecting?”
Ethan answered first.
“My family.”
The therapist waited.
Ethan sighed.
“My access to my family.”
Laura looked at him.
He continued.
“After the affair, every new detail felt like one more thing Laura could use to decide she was done.”
“So?”
“So I filtered.”
“What?”
“Anything involving Rachel. The follow-up contacts. The attorney file. The employer review.”
Laura’s jaw tightened.
Ethan looked at her.
“I told myself it was because none of it meant I was cheating again.”
“And really?”
“I didn't trust you to stay if you knew everything.”
Laura looked down.
That sentence hurt because it was honest.
Then the therapist turned toward her.
“What were you protecting?”
“Myself.”
“From?”
“Being stupid again.”
Ethan flinched.
Laura continued.
“I stayed after the affair. People told me I was weak. My sister thought I was crazy. Every time Ethan acted secretive, I wondered whether everyone had been right about me.”
“So Rachel offered certainty.”
“Yes.”
“And you gave her the key.”
“Yes.”
Ethan looked toward the window.
Laura forced herself to continue.
“I trusted someone who hated our marriage because asking Ethan directly meant risking another lie.”
The therapist asked:
“What did secrecy give each of you?”
Ethan answered:
“Control.”
Laura said it at almost the same moment.
Neither smiled.
That was the thing they had both been protecting.
Not the marriage.
Not Sophia.
Control over when pain arrived.
Ethan turned toward Laura.
“I don't know if I can forgive the key yet.”
“I know.”
Laura looked at him.
“I don't know if I can forgive learning you were still deciding what truths I could handle.”
“I know.”
