Chapter 7 - THE MESSAGES ETHAN NEVER SENT
The answer began with metadata.
Rachel’s screenshots were not what they appeared to be.
Some contained genuine messages Ethan wrote during the affair three years earlier.
The dates had been altered before Rachel sent them to Laura.
Others were composites.
Fragments of old messages placed beside newer timestamps.
A forensic consultant compared them against Ethan’s archived phone backup obtained with his consent.
The recent conversations did not exist.
Laura sat through the explanation feeling foolish.
Rachel had not fabricated everything.
That was why the deception worked.
She used real words.
Real betrayal.
Real sentences Ethan was ashamed of.
Then changed when they happened.
One message hurt Laura especially.
I can't do this until Sophia is older.
Rachel made it appear eight weeks old.
Ethan had actually written it before Sophia was born.
During the affair.
Laura looked at him.
“What did you mean?”
He did not hide.
“I was telling Rachel I couldn't leave you while you were pregnant.”
Laura looked away.
“So you considered leaving.”
“Yes.”
“For her.”
“Yes.”
“Then changed your mind.”
“Yes.”
There was no comforting version.
Ethan had been worse during the affair than Laura understood.
He had also genuinely ended it.
Both truths belonged in the marriage.
The second forensic finding concerned Laura’s key.
Rachel photographed it at the Stamford coffee shop before Laura handed it over.
She also photographed Laura’s work badge lying beside her purse.
That detail bothered the consultant.
“Why photograph the badge?”
Laura’s schedule was partially visible.
A staff meeting.
A client call.
Rachel had been tracking when Laura could not easily leave work.
Then another piece emerged.
Rachel had researched Sophia’s preschool calendar.
The school website showed an early dismissal that week.
Laura had forgotten.
Rachel had not.
She knew there was a chance Sophia would be home earlier than Laura expected.
Laura felt cold.
Rachel’s entry at 1:17 was no accident.
She had chosen a time when Ethan’s schedule was uncertain, Laura was stuck at work, and Sophia might be home.
Why?
The answer appeared in a draft message on Rachel’s seized phone.
Never sent.
If I can make her afraid of me, he’ll finally understand what choosing Laura cost.
Laura stopped reading.
Rachel had not simply wanted a document.
