Chapter 5 - WHAT ETHAN KEPT IN THE BURGUNDY FILE

Ethan allowed Laura’s attorney to review the folder first.
Laura respected that.
Barely.
Then she received a copy.
The first page was a letter from Ethan’s attorney dated twenty-seven months earlier.
Ms. Vaughn:
Mr. Cole does not consent to further personal contact.
The next pages documented emails Rachel had sent after the affair ended.
Some angry.
Some apologetic.
Some nostalgic.
One simply read:
You don't get to rebuild your perfect family and pretend I disappeared.
Ethan never replied.
There were certified-mail receipts.
Blocked-number logs.
A security report from Ethan’s former office after Rachel appeared in the parking garage.
And one handwritten letter from Rachel.
That was the document Ethan feared Laura seeing.
Not because it proved renewed infidelity.
Because it described the affair in humiliating detail.
Restaurants.
Hotels.
Promises Ethan made before ending it.
One line hurt Laura more than she expected.
You told me Laura had become a roommate you were afraid to leave.
Laura set the page down.
Ethan had confessed the affair.
He had not confessed every sentence.
Of course he hadn't.
Nobody could inventory every cruelty committed inside an affair.
Still, Laura understood why he hid the file.
She also understood why hiding it had been wrong.
Rachel knew the file existed because Ethan’s attorney had referenced it during a prior harassment dispute.
She wanted it destroyed.
Not recovered.
Destroyed.
A later email made that clear.
If Laura ever sees the original letter, you’ll lose her anyway.
Ethan had preserved it because his attorney told him to preserve every communication.
Then placed the entire file inside a locked cabinet.
Laura asked him that evening:
“Why did you tell me there was no contact?”
“Because there wasn't any conversation.”
“She contacted you.”
“Yes.”
“You knew the distinction would matter to me.”
“Yes.”
“Then why use the safer wording?”
Ethan looked exhausted.
“Because I was ashamed.”
Laura nodded.
At least that answer was honest.
He added:
“And because I thought if you knew Rachel was still circling our life, you'd leave.”
Laura stared at him.
“You hid information because you were afraid I would make a choice.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
He heard it too.

Control did not always look like Rachel gripping Sophia’s sleeve.
Sometimes it looked like choosing which truth your spouse was allowed to have.
