Chapter 8 - Claire Took Back the One Thing Derek Needed Most

Claire filed for legal separation and temporary financial relief.

The decision terrified her more than chemotherapy had.

Cancer was something happening inside her body.

Leaving Derek required choices.

She hated choices now.

Every decision seemed to consume energy she could not replace.

Rebecca kept the process narrow.

Preserve marital funds.

Restore Claire’s access to money needed for housing and medical care.

Prevent extraordinary asset transfers.

Document the retirement-account authorization dispute.

Address the jointly owned home.

Claire did not demand everything.

She demanded enough to stop Derek from controlling her through scarcity.

The judge entered temporary financial restraints while the issues were reviewed.

Derek called Walter instead of Claire.

“You’re destroying her marriage.”

Walter almost shouted.

Then remembered what Claire had asked.

Do not fight my battles in ways that create more battles for me.

Walter said, “Talk to her lawyer.”

Derek laughed.

“You think you’re helping? She’s dying, Walter.”

Walter’s grip tightened around the phone.

“That doesn’t make her yours to dispose of.”

“She has months, maybe a year. You have no idea what caring for that looks like.”

Walter went very quiet.

“So that’s your defense?”

“I’m saying you arrived for one afternoon and decided I’m a monster.”

“No.”

Walter looked through the apartment window at Claire sleeping on the couch.

“I arrived one afternoon and watched you kick my sick daughter to the floor.”

Derek hung up.

The call clarified something for Walter.

Caregiver exhaustion was real.

Fear was real.

Resentment could be real.

None of them required cruelty.

None required stealing financial control.

None required convincing a woman with cancer that the people who loved her were burdens she should avoid.

Claire had been terrified that leaving Derek would mean facing death alone.

Instead, filing the separation did something she had not expected.

It exposed how many people Derek had kept at a distance.

Nina.

Former coworkers.

Her cousin Jill.

Two college friends.

Walter.

The loneliness had been partly real.

Partly engineered.
