Chapter 3 - The Hospital Note Derek Couldn't Explain

Walter took Claire to the emergency department.
She resisted.
Not because she did not need care.
Because she kept looking toward the house.
“My medications.”
“We’ll get them.”
“My oncology binder.”
“We’ll get that too.”
“Dad, Derek—”
“Can be angry.”
Claire looked at him.
Walter kept his voice steady.
“You don’t have to manage his anger tonight.”
At the hospital, scans showed no fracture from the fall, but Claire had soft-tissue injuries, worsening dehydration, severe anemia related to treatment, and pain that had not been adequately controlled.
Her oncologist was notified.
A social worker asked Claire privately whether she felt safe at home.
Claire stared at the blanket across her legs.
“No.”
That single word changed the evening.
Walter sat outside while Claire spoke with hospital staff.
He hated every minute he could not protect her.
He also understood she needed a room where answering honestly did not mean watching her father explode.
Hours later, Claire allowed Walter back in.
He sat beside her.
“I’m sorry.”
She frowned.
“For what?”
“For not knowing.”
Claire looked away.
“You couldn’t know something I kept lying about.”
Walter did not argue.
A nurse brought in an updated medication list.
Walter noticed a note attached to an earlier oncology visit.
Family support limited by patient preference.
He asked Claire about it.
She hesitated.
“I told them I didn’t want anyone contacted.”
“Why?”
“Because Derek said once you knew, you’d take over.”
Walter’s face tightened.
“What does that mean?”
“He said you’d make everything about you. That you’d start calling doctors, showing up, telling me how to fight it.”
Walter almost defended himself.
Then stopped.
He could be overbearing.
After Claire’s mother died when Claire was nineteen, Walter had responded to grief by trying to fix everything.
Broken appliances.
College tuition.
Car repairs.
Bad boyfriends.
Problems Claire had never asked him to solve.
Derek had not invented that flaw.
He had used it.
Claire rubbed her forehead.
“And I didn’t want you looking at me like this.”
Walter swallowed.
“Like what?”
“Like I’m dying.”
There it was.
Part of the reason belonged to Derek.
Part belonged to Claire.
And part belonged to Walter himself.

But none of it explained why Claire had been kicked to the floor in her own bedroom.
That answer would require a different kind of honesty.
