Chapter 10 - Why Claire Really Kept Her Father Away

The deepest truth came during a counseling session at the cancer center.

Walter was not there.

Derek was not there.

Claire finally stopped explaining everyone else.

Her therapist asked, “When you first learned it was metastatic, who did you want to call?”

“My dad.”

“Why didn’t you?”

Claire answered automatically.

“I didn’t want him controlling everything.”

The therapist waited.

Claire hated when therapists did that.

She looked away.

“And?”

Claire began crying.

“My mom.”

The answer surprised even her.

Claire’s mother, Diane, died from ovarian cancer when Claire was nineteen.

Walter had cared for her through surgeries, chemotherapy, hospitalizations, and hospice.

Claire remembered him carrying Diane to the bathroom when she could no longer walk.

Remembered hearing him cry in the garage because he refused to do it in front of his wife.

Remembered the final morning.

Walter sitting beside Diane’s bed, holding her hand after she was gone.

When Claire received her own diagnosis, she did not merely fear becoming controlled by her father.

She feared making him live through it again.

Derek knew that.

Claire had told him the night pathology confirmed cancer.

“I can’t do this to Dad twice.”

Derek held her and said, “Then don’t tell him yet.”

At first, it felt compassionate.

Later, whenever Claire considered calling Walter, Derek returned to the same wound.

Do you really want him reliving your mother’s death?

Let him have some peace.

You know what this will do to him.

The major twist was painfully simple.

Derek had not created Claire’s silence from nothing.

Claire created the first silence out of love and fear.

Derek discovered that silence was useful.

Then he protected it for himself.

It allowed him to move money.

Prepare an apartment.

Withdraw emotionally.

Control the story others heard.

And increasingly treat Claire however he wanted without risking witnesses.

Claire covered her face.

For months she had wondered why she had been weak enough to let Derek isolate her.

Now she understood.

The door had been opened by one of the most loving impulses she had ever had.

She wanted to spare her father.

Derek turned that love into a lock.
