Chapter 11 - Walter Couldn't Undo the Lost Months

Walter was devastated when Claire finally told him.

They sat in the patient apartment after dinner.

“I didn’t call because Mom died.”

Walter stared at her.

Claire explained.

How watching him lose Diane stayed inside her.

How cancer made her nineteen again.

How Derek initially helped her keep the diagnosis private.

Then gradually made privacy feel compulsory.

Walter listened.

When she finished, he rubbed both hands over his face.

“I would’ve come anyway.”

“I know.”

“I would’ve wanted to come.”

“I know.”

“You don’t protect somebody by deciding they’d rather not love you through something awful.”

Claire looked at him.

“Sounds familiar.”

Walter stopped.

Then laughed once through his tears.

“Fair.”

He reached across the table.

Claire took his hand.

Neither pretended the lost eight months could be recovered.

Walter had missed the first surgery.

The first chemotherapy infusion.

The day Claire shaved the worst patches of thinning hair.

The night she learned treatment had failed.

There would always be grief attached to those absences.

But Walter did something Derek never had.

He accepted that understanding why Claire hid the truth did not erase the consequences.

And Claire accepted the same about herself.

Then Rebecca called with another problem.

Derek was challenging Claire’s account of the assault.

He claimed she had become emotionally volatile after learning her prognosis and had initiated the physical confrontation.

Claire felt sick.

Walter stood.

“I’ll testify.”

Rebecca said, “You will testify to what you personally saw.”

Walter stopped.

Not what he believed.

Not what Derek probably did before he arrived.

Only what he saw.

That discipline mattered.

The truth was strongest when nobody exaggerated it.

Walter had seen Derek standing over Claire after hearing him call her useless, sick, and half-dead.

May you like

He had seen Claire injured and terrified.

It would have to be enough.
