Chapter 4 - Walter Didn't Take Over
Walter wanted Claire to come home with him.
He did not say it immediately.
That surprised her.
Instead he asked, “What do you want?”
Claire stared at him.
For eight months, nearly every serious conversation had begun with someone telling her what she should do.
More chemotherapy.
Less chemotherapy.
Eat more.
Sleep more.
Be positive.
Stop reading statistics.
Stay home.
Don’t call your father.
Don’t upset Derek.
Now Walter simply waited.
“I don’t want to go back there tonight.”
“Okay.”
“I don’t want to move to Fort Wayne.”
Walter’s expression flickered.
“Okay.”
Claire watched him carefully.
“I need to stay close to my oncology team.”
“Then we stay close.”
“We?”
Walter gave a tired half-smile.
“I can rent a place nearby if you want help without having me in your face every minute.”
Claire started crying again.
Not because the solution was perfect.
Because nobody had attached obedience to the help.
With assistance from the hospital social worker, Claire arranged to stay temporarily in a furnished apartment used by patients and families near the cancer center.
Walter took a room at a motel seven minutes away.
Derek called repeatedly.
Claire did not answer.
He sent messages instead.
You embarrassed me.
Your father is making this worse.
You hit me too.
You know how stressed I’ve been.
Come home and we’ll talk.
Claire showed them to the social worker.
Then to an attorney referred through a domestic-violence advocacy organization.
The attorney, Rebecca Lin, explained that Claire’s illness did not remove her ability to make legal decisions.
Her house was jointly titled.
Their finances were mostly joint.
Derek could not simply declare her unwanted and erase her rights.
Claire filed for a protective order based on the assault.
It was not an instant divorce.
It was not vengeance.
It was a safety boundary.
When Walter heard, he said only, “Good.”
Claire looked at him.
“You’re not going to tell me what else to do?”
“I’m learning.”
That answer mattered.
For years Derek had convinced Claire that asking Walter for help meant surrendering control.
