Chapter 14 - Derek Had One Last Chance to Tell the Truth
The protective-order matter and divorce proceedings moved on separate timelines.
Derek’s attorneys wanted settlement.
So did Claire.
She had no interest in spending whatever time she had left turning every hurt into litigation.
But she would not sign an agreement describing the bedroom incident as “mutual physical conflict.”
Derek objected.
“You pushed me.”
Claire looked at him across another video conference.
“I did.”
Rebecca stayed silent.
Claire continued.
“I pushed your chest after you kicked me to the floor and told me my family could take me back.”
Derek looked uncomfortable.
“That’s not how I remember it.”
“My father heard what you said.”
“He walked in at the end.”
“Yes.”
Claire’s voice remained steady.
“And what did he see?”
Derek said nothing.
“What did he see, Derek?”
He rubbed his forehead.
“You on the bed.”
“And?”
“Me standing there.”
“And what had you just told me?”
His attorney leaned toward him.
Derek finally answered.
“That you were sick.”
Claire almost laughed.
There it was again.
A cleaner word.
“You called me useless, broke and half-dead.”
Derek looked away.
Claire felt no triumph.
Only exhaustion.
“I don’t need you to become a monster in your own story,” she said. “I need you to stop making me disappear from mine.”
Something in Derek’s face collapsed.
For the first time, he said:
“I was cruel to you.”
Claire waited.
“I was angry that you got sick.”
He swallowed.
“And I hated myself for being angry, so I blamed you for making my life unbearable.”
No excuse followed.
Claire did not forgive him.
But she accepted the statement as the first honest thing he had offered in months.
The parties moved toward a financial settlement that acknowledged the disputed transfers, preserved Claire’s medical and housing needs, and separated their accounts.
Derek left the marital home.
Claire did not return to it.
The house no longer felt like something worth winning.
She chose a smaller rental near her cancer center instead.
The final unresolved question was no longer what Derek had done.
