Chapter 9 - The Name on the Inquiry

The humane certifier suspended the farm’s contract before sunset. Without the premium, the next mortgage payment would fail. Eight workers asked Emily whether to find jobs. She answered each call while Travis called it sabotage.

Seth offered Emily his spare room in Salina. She chose the confidential apartment instead.

“I love you,” she told him. “I don’t trust family walls yet.”

Marianne rented the unit next door. Emily called the arrangement comforting and unbearable. She wanted her mother near at night, then resented her morning kettle.

Darlene returned to the farmhouse for medication. Travis had changed the locks. She slept in her car behind a grocery store until Seth found her, cursed her for waiting so long, and paid for one night at another motel. Emily covered the next six nights but would not visit.

At breakfast Marianne placed toast beside her daughter. Emily struck the plate twice with her knife, heard the sound, and shoved it away.

“He didn’t invent that signal,” she said.

Marianne waited.

“We did. Years ago. Two taps meant open the side gate. One meant an inspector was close.”

The red scoop had once been a work tool, not a weapon. Emily looked sick admitting it.

Before Marianne could ask, the licensing board emailed. Its first inquiry named Emily, not Travis. Her signature appeared on every disputed flock report.

Emily closed the laptop.

“This is why he knew I wouldn’t call,” she said. “He didn’t just trap me in the coop. He trapped me in my own work.”
