For three weeks, my daughter’s phone went silent, and every message I sent stayed unread. When I arrived at her farmhouse, my son-in-law blocked the porch with a fake smile. “She’s visiting friends,” he lied. Then I heard crying from the chicken coop.

Travis moved first. He reported false logs, missing mortality reports, and unstable conduct. He needed no hidden evidence. A routine audit already showed feed deliveries, staffing hours, and flock counts that could not all be true.

The accusation suspended Emily’s vote under the farm agreement. Travis told the lender she had abandoned her duties and asked for authority to refinance without her consent.

Marianne wanted to call reporters from her prosecutor days.

Emily stopped her. “Every dramatic thing you do helps his story.”

So they answered procedure with procedure. Emily authorized the clinic to verify her condition. She requested a formal audit and asked each worker to describe routines rather than choose sides. Two refused because Travis controlled their housing. One admitted night transfers but would not sign.

Darlene offered to testify about the coop.

“Not yet,” Emily said. “He’ll say his frightened mother is repeating what I planted.”

Darlene accepted that without defense.

Then the north-house ventilation shut down. Travis claimed the controller required a password only Emily knew. Temperatures climbed while thousands of birds crowded the floor.

“If I give it to him, I help his case,” Emily said.

“If you don’t, the birds die,” Marianne answered.
