For three weeks, my daughter’s phone went silent, and every message I sent stayed unread. When I arrived at her farmhouse, my son-in-law blocked the porch with a fake smile. “She’s visiting friends,” he lied. Then I heard crying from the chicken coop.

The board offered no clean bargain. Emily could limit her statement to the current overcrowding and confinement. That might preserve worker insurance but let Travis blame every false report on her.

Or she could disclose the entire two-year system.

Full disclosure could suspend her license, end the contract, trigger review, and expose Darlene and Marianne. It might also prove why Travis believed she would never seek help.

Darlene said, “Think about the workers.”

Seth turned on her. “You mean think about Travis.”

“I mean three children lose asthma coverage if that plan ends Friday.”

The argument could not be reduced to cowardice. Darlene used real families to excuse delay, but they remained real.

Emily called each worker herself. One admitted he had ignored dead hens because Travis controlled the trailer where his family lived. Another asked Emily to lie until his wife finished chemotherapy. A third said he wanted the truth even if it cost him the job.

Their needs contradicted one another. None could be saved without someone else paying.

Marianne told Emily to include her part. She did not ask for gentler wording.

At dawn, Emily authorized every agency and business to compare records. Then she asked Darlene to testify about both the food she brought to the coop and the hours she altered.

Darlene nodded. “He’ll never forgive me.”
