Chapter 14 - No One Left Clean

The truth emerged through ordinary systems that no one could charm. Feed invoices established the actual flock size. Payroll records showed night transfers before inspections. Mortality reports rose whenever Travis blocked ventilation to pressure Emily into cooperating. The clinic documented dehydration, confinement injuries, and the jagged haircut.
Darlene admitted changing work codes and waiting six days after learning Emily was locked inside the coop. Marianne admitted urging the first false report and co-signing a contract-dependent loan.
Travis denied confinement until the auditor asked why he had canceled Emily’s health insurance while claiming she left voluntarily. He tried to say she had requested it. The cancellation call came from his office while clinic notes placed Emily in the coop.
No single fact exposed him. His choices stopped fitting together.
The operating committee removed Travis pending review. The buyer ended the humane premium. The lender placed the property into supervised restructuring rather than immediate foreclosure. A neighboring cooperative offered temporary work to six employees; two others left the county.
Emily accepted a one-year license suspension and restitution based on income. Darlene faced an employment-fraud review. Marianne’s retirement account remained tied to the loan.
When served, Travis asked Darlene to come home and fight.

She answered, “Which home?”
She turned off her phone because his panic no longer became her emergency.
