Chapter 1 - The Door He Thought Would Stay Closed

The chicken-coop door slammed against the wall, scattering hens through a blade of dawn light. Marianne Holt stepped over the broken latch and saw her daughter crouched in the straw, one hand buried in a dented feed pan. Emily was chewing because hunger had beaten dignity. Her floral dress hung from one shoulder. Her dark hair had been hacked short in uneven clumps, and dried mud striped her bare knees.

Behind Marianne, Travis Cole stopped smiling.

“She wouldn’t calm down,” he said. “I had to keep her somewhere safe.”

Marianne did not turn. She had spent twenty-six years questioning people who lied for a living, and Travis made the oldest mistake: he explained before anyone accused him.

“Emily,” she said softly. “Look at me.”

Her daughter’s eyes found her, then darted toward the porch. “Did Darlene hear your car?”

It was the wrong question. Marianne had expected relief, fear, maybe anger. Instead Emily sounded terrified for the woman who had stood beside Travis for three silent weeks.

Marianne reached down, but Emily recoiled when the red plastic scoop scraped the metal pan. Travis stepped into the doorway, boots grinding corn.

“This is private family business.”

Marianne lifted the scoop and saw two fresh dents along its rim.

“You locked the wrong woman in a cage,” she said.

Travis reached for the door.

Emily whispered, “Mom, don’t make him think I told you.”

The hens rushed past Marianne, and Emily covered her head as if even an open door could still punish her.
