Chapter 11 - The Door Marianne Helped Build

Saving the birds hurt Emily’s case, but refusing would have changed who she was. Marianne accused Travis of using mercy as leverage. Emily answered, “He learned that from us.”

The sentence opened Marianne’s polished history.

After Emily’s father died, the farm missed two mortgage payments. The humane contract was new, the winter flock was too large, and eight families depended on the payroll. Emily wanted to reduce production and admit the violation. Marianne urged her to survive one crowded season and correct the numbers after Christmas.

She called the lie practical.

Travis, then only Emily’s fiancé and business manager, built the schedule that shifted birds before inspections. Marianne admired how decisively he handled emergencies. When he answered Emily’s calls and interrupted meetings, Marianne called him helpful.

Grief had made control feel like safety.

“I helped build the room he locked you in,” Marianne said.

Emily looked through the apartment window. “You helped build the door. I walked through it.”

She admitted renewing the false certification twice. Not from force, but because payroll cleared, calls stopped, and everyone praised recovery.

The licensing interview was set for Monday.

“If I tell the whole truth,” Emily said, “I lose my career, workers lose insurance, and your retirement loan becomes part of the investigation.”

Marianne did not offer a solution. For once, she asked, “What do you need from me?”

Emily answered, “Don’t rescue me from the cost.”
