Chapter 8 - The Choice That Put Everyone at Risk

Dante contacted the board chair and outside counsel that afternoon.

He did not demand Javier’s termination.

He disclosed the lawn assault, his family relationship to Javier and Clara, the old warehouse dispute, and the newly discovered vendor concerns.

Then he recused himself from any final employment decision involving Javier.

That surprised Clara.

“You could fire him yourself.”

“I could also spend the next year explaining why I fired my brother-in-law the day after fighting him on my lawn.”

“So you’re handing it to the board.”

“I’m handing them facts.”

The decision cost him immediately.

The board chair, Elaine Porter, told Dante that until the matter was reviewed, his own leadership conduct would also be examined.

“That’s appropriate,” Dante said.

Clara stared at him after the call.

“You’re letting them investigate you?”

“I’m not asking anybody to believe me because I’m the boss.”

Her laugh had no humor in it.

“Dad would’ve hated that.”

“That may be the best argument for doing it.”

By evening, outside counsel had instructed company staff to preserve relevant vendor and personnel records.

Javier’s access remained suspended.

Clara’s invoice-approval authority was suspended as well.

She didn’t object.

Then her phone began vibrating.

Javier.

Again.

Again.

Again.

She declined every call.

The fourth time, a text appeared.

Clara read it and slid the phone across the table.

Did Dante find what the old man kept?

Dante looked up.

“He knows.”

“He knows something survived.”

Another message followed.

Tell me Leo didn’t read it.

Dante felt something hard settle in his stomach.

Javier had been watching the envelope too.

Not on the lawn.

Before the lawn.

“He knew Leo had something?”

Clara shook her head.

“I never told him.”

“Then how does he know Leo might’ve read it?”

Clara looked toward the window.

“The hallway yesterday.”

“What about it?”

“When I saw the envelope in Leo’s pocket, I asked him where he found it. Javier came around the corner before I could get it away from him.”

“He heard you?”

“Not everything.”

“What did you say?”

Clara hesitated.

“I said, ‘Your grandfather should never have kept that.’”

Dante understood.

That was enough.

Javier had spent the rest of the gathering wondering what Leo carried.

Then came the confrontation.

The taunts.

The punch.

The attempt to make Dante lose control before anyone could learn what the envelope contained.

Dante stood.

“I’m taking the kids home.”

Clara grabbed his wrist.

“Don’t use the usual route.”

He looked at her.

She released him immediately.

“I’m not saying Javier will hurt them.”

“Then what are you saying?”

May you like

“I’m saying when Javier gets scared, he stops thinking about consequences.”

For the first time, Clara sounded less like a wife protecting her husband than someone who had spent years calculating his fear.
