Chapter 11 - The Mistake Dante Couldn’t Blame on His Father

Dante changed the children’s routines the next morning.
Javier was removed from every school pickup list and emergency-contact form where his name still appeared through family connections.
Dante told Leo’s soccer coach that only preapproved adults were permitted to leave with him after practice.
He also told both children something he should have said weeks earlier.
“You do not have to answer adult questions about me. Not for Uncle Javier. Not for Aunt Clara. Not for anybody.”
Leo nodded.
Then he surprised his father.
“I didn’t like when Uncle Javier asked if you got mad at home.”
Dante sat beside him at the kitchen island.
“How many times did he ask?”
“Three.”
Dante had known about one.
Leo twisted the sleeve of his pale-blue shirt.
“He said strong kids don’t run to their dads every time somebody makes them uncomfortable.”
Dante looked across the kitchen at Mia coloring quietly.
His first instinct was anger at Javier.
The second was harder.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Leo shrugged.
“You always said Uncle Javier talks too much and I should ignore him.”
Dante had said exactly that.
He remembered it because he had been unloading groceries while Leo complained about Javier’s comments.
Dante had wanted peace.
He had wanted to avoid another family confrontation.
He had taught his son to dismiss discomfort because the person causing it was family.
That belonged to Dante.
Not his father.
Not Clara.
Not Javier.
That evening Clara came by alone.
She had packed two suitcases and moved into a furnished apartment.
She and Javier were not officially separated yet, she explained. She simply needed somewhere he could not walk into.
Dante did not congratulate her.
He asked one question.
“Are you going to tell the board the truth?”
Clara looked toward Leo in the backyard.
“Yes.”
“All of it?”
“Yes.”
“Even your part?”
Her answer took longer.
“Yes.”
Dante believed she meant it.
He still didn’t trust her.
Those were different things.
Clara accepted that too.
Before leaving, she approached Leo but stopped several feet away.
“I’m sorry I asked you for that envelope.”
Leo glanced at his father.
Dante let him decide whether to answer.
Leo said, “I thought you were going to take it.”
“I was.”
“Why?”
Clara looked at him carefully.
“Because I was scared of something I did a long time ago.”
Leo considered this.
Then he asked the question none of the adults had managed to phrase so cleanly.
“Were you scared because it was dangerous, or because it was true?”
Clara did not answer immediately.
May you like
When she finally did, her voice was quiet.
“Because it was true.”
