Chapter 2 - The Drawer in Granddad’s Study

Dante didn’t ask about the envelope until Leo and Mia were safely inside the estate house.

The gathering had dissolved quickly after the fight. Some relatives left. Others stayed near the patio speaking in lowered voices. Javier had been escorted toward the driveway—not restrained, simply separated from Dante until he could leave.

Clara remained.

That alone surprised him.

She followed Dante into the sunroom, where Leo sat with Mia beside him and one of the security men waited near the door.

Dante crouched in front of his son.

“You okay?”

Leo nodded.

“Did Uncle Javier touch either of you?”

“No.”

Mia answered faster than her brother. “He was yelling.”

Dante looked back at Leo.

“What’s in your pocket?”

Leo hesitated.

Clara took one step closer.

“Dante.”

He turned.

Her voice had changed completely. The polished hostess from an hour earlier was gone.

“Take it from him.”

Dante stood slowly.

“What is it?”

“Just take it.”

Leo immediately shifted away from Clara.

That bothered Dante more than the request.

He held out his hand to his son.

Leo removed the cream-colored envelope carefully. It was old enough that the paper had softened around the corners. No stamp. No postmark.

Just one word written across the front in faded blue ink.

Dante.

His own name.

He recognized the handwriting before Clara said anything.

It was hers.

“Where did you get this?” he asked Leo.

“In Granddad’s study.”

Clara shut her eyes briefly.

Leo continued.

“I was looking at the chess table. The little drawer was stuck, so Mr. Henry helped me open it.”

Henry Bell had maintained the estate for almost twenty years. He had worked for Dante’s father before Dante ever came back to the family business.

“There were old score sheets and this underneath.”

Dante turned the envelope over.

Still sealed.

Clara reached for it.

Dante pulled it out of reach.

“No.”

“It’s mine.”

“My name is on it.”

“I wrote it.”

“Then tell me what it says.”

Clara looked toward Leo and Mia.

“Not in front of them.”

That was reasonable.

Her next words were not.

“And not while Javier is anywhere near this property.”

Dante studied her.

“You think he knows it exists?”

Clara didn’t answer.

Leo looked between them.

“Aunt Clara saw me with it before lunch.”

Dante’s attention snapped back to his son.

“When?”

“In the hallway.”

Clara looked at him sharply.

Leo continued, quieter now.

“She asked where I found it. Then Uncle Javier came around the corner, and she told me to put it away.”

Dante looked down at the envelope again.

The obvious explanation was that Clara had written something years ago that embarrassed her.

But embarrassment didn’t explain why she had followed Leo.

It didn’t explain why she had looked more frightened by an envelope than by her husband being pinned to the ground.

And it definitely didn’t explain what Clara whispered next.

“I thought Dad destroyed that.”
