Chapter 10 - What Their Father Was Actually Protecting

Dante met Clara in the old study that evening.

The chess table remained against the far wall.

The drawer where Leo found the envelope was still open.

Clara stood beside it for a long time before speaking.

“Dad knew the Ridgeway contract was dirty before you confronted Javier.”

Dante had suspected that much.

What followed was worse.

Anthony Mercer had personally approved Ridgeway after learning Javier had made promises to Nolan Price that could expose the company to financial and reputational damage.

He needed time to unwind the arrangement.

The bank review was real.

So was the fear that scrutiny could hurt the company.

But Anthony had another problem.

Dante had already begun documenting Javier’s purchasing decisions.

If Dante remained in control of operations, he would keep digging.

Anthony believed that would force the problem into the open before he could contain it quietly.

“So he removed me,” Dante said.

Clara nodded.

“He needed a reason.”

“The fight.”

“Yes.”

Dante looked toward the chess table.

“And you gave him one.”

“I did.”

Clara did not blame her father for that part.

Anthony supplied the words.

Clara still chose to repeat them.

But the letter had never been hidden because Anthony feared Dante would leave the family.

That had been the explanation he gave Clara.

The real reason was simpler.

The letter contradicted the record he had deliberately created.

Dante thought about the clues in reverse.

His father calling the deputy first.

Clara repeating his exact language.

The confession disappearing into Anthony’s private study.

Javier spending years treating the old report like insurance.

And Clara’s panic when Leo found the one document capable of showing that the family’s accepted story had been manufactured before the deputy even arrived.

Dante had believed Javier was protected because Clara loved him too much to tell the truth.

That was only part of it.

Javier had been protected first by Anthony.

Then by Clara.

Then by Dante himself, once he returned to the company and decided reopening old wounds would be bad for everyone.

Three people, for three different reasons, had allowed the same lie to keep functioning.

Clara sat in their father’s old chair.

“There’s something I need you to understand.”

“What?”

“Dad thought he was saving the company.”

Dante looked at her.

“Did it work?”

“For a while.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

Clara lowered her eyes.

“No.”

North Ridge existed because the original Ridgeway problem had never actually been resolved.

Anthony had postponed it.

Clara had concealed it.

Javier had learned from both of them.

Every time pressure appeared, somebody else absorbed the damage.

Eight years ago, it had been Dante.

Now Javier had tried to use Leo to provoke the same pattern.

The realization made Dante sick in a way the old betrayal never had.

His father’s system had survived his father.

And Dante had nearly handed it to his children by refusing to confront it.
