Chapter 1 - The Fight Clara Wasn’t Watching

Javier straightened the front of his navy suit as if the argument had inconvenienced him more than angered him. Around them, the manicured lawn behind the Mercer estate was still arranged for an afternoon family gathering—white patio chairs, untouched drinks, relatives who had stopped pretending not to listen.

Then Javier stepped directly toward Dante and shoved him hard in the chest with both hands.

Dante absorbed the impact without giving ground.

More important, he stayed between Javier and the children.

Leo stood several feet behind his father with Mia pressed close to his side. Nine-year-old Leo’s strawberry-blond hair had fallen over his forehead. The corner of an old cream-colored envelope protruded slightly from his back pocket.

Javier smirked.

“What are you going to do about it, Boss?”

He threw a punch toward Dante’s face.

Dante moved before anyone else did.

He slipped the punch, caught Javier’s wrist, turned sharply, and folded Javier’s arm behind his back in one continuous motion. A second later Javier was facedown in the grass, his expensive suit grinding into the lawn he had been admiring twenty minutes earlier.

Two of Dante’s security men came forward immediately, but neither touched Javier.

They moved Leo and Mia several feet back instead.

“Stay with them,” Dante said without looking away from Javier.

He held his brother-in-law down only long enough to stop the struggle, then released him and gave him one hard shove away.

Javier rolled to his side and crawled backward before getting one knee beneath him.

Dante stepped directly between him and the children.

“You wanted to teach my son strength.”

For the first time that afternoon, Javier stopped smiling.

Dante’s voice dropped.

“Remember who taught you fear.”

Something changed in Javier’s expression.

Not embarrassment.

Recognition.

Dante noticed it, but before he could decide what it meant, movement at the edge of his vision pulled his attention across the lawn.

Clara stood near the patio.

She was Javier’s wife and Dante’s younger sister, but she wasn’t looking at either man.

She was staring directly at Leo.

More precisely, she was staring at Leo’s back pocket.

Dante followed her gaze.

The corner of the old cream-colored envelope was still visible.

Clara’s face tightened.

Leo noticed.

He immediately placed one hand over his back pocket, hiding the exposed corner without taking the envelope out.

Dante expected Clara to say something.

She didn’t.

Leo looked straight at his aunt.

Clara stayed perfectly still.

And in that strange exchange, Dante forgot Javier for half a second.

Because Clara had just watched her husband attack her brother.

Yet the thing that frightened her was in a nine-year-old boy’s pocket.
