Chapter 3 - The Name Clara Didn’t Want Mentioned

Dante sent Leo and Mia upstairs with his longtime house manager before speaking to Clara again.

The moment the children disappeared, she reached for the envelope.

He moved it behind his back.

“Stop.”

“You don’t understand.”

“Then explain it.”

Clara folded her arms tightly across her cream dress.

Outside, someone was stacking unused chairs from the ruined gathering. Through the glass doors, Dante could see Javier near the far end of the driveway arguing with a man who had arrived to take him home.

Dante had already told his security team not to touch him unless he tried to return.

Clara watched the driveway once, then looked away.

“You need to let him leave believing today was just about the fight.”

Dante stared at her.

“What else would he think it was about?”

She hesitated.

That hesitation gave him more than any answer.

His phone buzzed.

It was a message from Javier.

Suspend me and I’ll make sure everybody remembers why your father stopped trusting you the first time.

Dante read it twice.

Eight years earlier, Dante had left Mercer Site & Development after a brutal dispute with his father. The official family explanation had always been simple: Dante had attacked Javier during an argument at one of their equipment warehouses.

Dante remembered the argument.

He remembered Javier swinging first.

He also remembered Clara telling their father the opposite.

For years, Dante had believed his sister had chosen her husband over him.

He lifted the envelope.

“This is about the warehouse.”

Clara said nothing.

“That’s why Dad had it.”

Still nothing.

Dante’s jaw tightened.

“You wrote me something afterward.”

“Dante—”

“What did you write?”

She looked toward the stairs as if making sure the children couldn’t hear.

“I wrote what I should’ve said that night.”

The answer landed harder than he expected.

Before he could press her, his phone rang.

Javier.

Dante declined it.

Another message appeared almost immediately.

Ask Clara what she told the police.

Dante looked up.

“Police?”

Clara turned toward the window.

The old incident had never produced charges. Dante had been told his father handled everything privately after security from the warehouse separated them.

He had never known law enforcement had taken a statement from Clara.

“You talked to the police?”

“It was one deputy.”

“You told me Dad kept it inside the family.”

“He told you a lot of things.”

Dante walked toward the desk and placed the envelope down without opening it.

Then he called the company’s operations director.

“Disable Javier’s building access and company accounts for now. Nothing else. I’ll explain tomorrow.”

Clara turned on him.

“Don’t do that.”

“He attacked me in front of my kids.”

“I know.”

“He’s done.”

“Dante, listen to me.”

“What?”

Her next question seemed to come from an entirely different conversation.

“Did you shut off his vendor approvals too?”

Dante stopped.

Javier’s physical attack had frightened her.

The old envelope had frightened her more.

But removing Javier’s authority inside the company seemed to frighten her most of all.
