Chapter 9 - When Business Learned the Family Secret

The next two days pulled the private mess into public light.
The bank’s workout team scheduled a review call. Mason had to tell department heads that the Mercer renewal was paused. A dispatcher named Reggie knocked on Lucas’s office door and asked, in the plain voice of a man with a mortgage and two daughters in braces, whether payroll would clear on Friday.
“We’re working it,” Lucas said.
He hated how thin that sounded.
Elise Warren sent Anna a written statement about the lunch. She described Brenda telling the guests that Gwen had become “too precious to contribute” and saying Lucas wouldn’t be home until after dinner. She also mentioned something Lucas hadn’t known.
“Brenda said Charlie’s warehouse would keep Dawson in the family for the next generation,” he read aloud.
Gwen looked up from the couch at Ava’s condo. “The next generation.”
“She kept talking about the baby like an asset,” Ava muttered.
By Thursday afternoon Anna and the bank’s counsel had untangled enough of the pending renewal to identify the real danger. Buried in the packet was a guaranty clause linked to Mercer Logistics’ existing debt. If Dawson Freight renewed the warehouse arrangement and drew on the line of credit, Lucas’s company could become responsible for a portion of Mercer’s default exposure.
Lucas sat back so hard his chair hit the wall.
“Mason never would’ve agreed to this,” he said.
“Mason never saw it in final form,” Anna replied. “The version in your signing packet is not the version originally circulated.”
Tasha slid over the markup trail. “This addendum was uploaded from your mother’s admin profile after business hours.”
Lucas thought of the open folder on the sideboard. Brenda had known exactly what Gwen had found and exactly what was hours away from becoming irreversible.
Anna folded her hands. “Charlie is already claiming you approved everything. If we push this formally, he will say your family dispute is a convenient excuse.”
“Then we prove otherwise,” Lucas said.
Anna gave him a hard look. “Then we’ll need your mother.”

That night Charlie finally returned Brenda’s calls.
Lucas was standing in Brenda’s condo entryway when he heard her say into the phone, voice breaking, “You told me the guaranty was temporary.”
