Chapter 12 - The Kitchen Table Confession

The second meeting started after Ava took a phone call in the hallway and came back to say Dr. Patel’s office had moved Gwen’s follow-up earlier because of her blood pressure.
It made everyone sharper. Time suddenly mattered in a different way.
Brenda sat with both palms flat on the table as if steadying herself against a wave.
“After your father died,” she said to Lucas, “every room went quiet. Nobody needed me to fix anything anymore. You had the company. Natalie had her own house. Gwen knew the books better than I did. Charlie made me feel… useful.”
“Useful enough to throw my business under him?” Lucas asked.
Brenda flinched.
“He told me you were drowning,” she said. “He said the bank was already nervous and he could make Dawson look stronger if more went through Mercer. He said once the baby came, once there was a grandson—”
“A grandson?” Gwen cut in. “You used that word while you were shoving a bone in my mouth. You didn’t care about that baby. You cared about keeping me quiet.”
Brenda’s mouth worked soundlessly for a second. “I was afraid if Lucas chose you over me, I’d have nothing left.”
Lucas let out a breath that sounded scraped raw. “Mom, I was supposed to choose my wife.”
Natalie wiped her face with the heel of her hand. “And you weren’t scared of losing us. You were scared of being ordinary.”
The line landed. Brenda looked down.
Gwen shifted carefully in her chair. “I didn’t tell Lucas everything when I first found the charges because after our miscarriage two years ago, every fight felt dangerous. I kept thinking if I stayed calm, if I waited for proof, I could protect this pregnancy and this family. All I protected was your time.”
Brenda finally looked at her. “What do you want from me?”
“Not a scene,” Gwen said. “Not church gossip. Not tears because Charlie lied to you.”
She pushed a legal pad across the table.
“I want the truth, in order, with dates.”
May you like
Brenda stared at it.
Then, with a shaking hand, she began to write.
