Chapter 14 - No More Private Mercy

Before they left for the meeting in Midtown, Lucas stopped by Brenda’s condo with Anna and Natalie.
Brenda was dressed carefully in a navy pantsuit, pearls at her throat, as if neatness could restore authority. The condo was half packed. Cardboard boxes lined the hallway because she had already agreed to sell it to begin paying restitution if the board required it.
Lucas stood in her living room and told her the choice as plainly as he could.
“You can tell the board yourself that you used my credentials, rerouted company payments, and concealed Charlie’s debt exposure. Or I can present the forensic report without you, and any chance you have of rebuilding anything with me or Natalie is gone.”
Brenda swallowed. “What about Gwen?”
Lucas held her gaze. “Gwen isn’t asking for humiliation. She’s asking for truth.”
At the law office conference room, Anna set up the ledger timeline on a screen. Mason sat at the far end of the table. Two bank representatives joined by video. Charlie had dialed in remotely with his own lawyer, apparently still convinced he could talk his way clear.
For a moment Brenda seemed ready to slide back into excuses. Her mouth opened on the familiar old phrases—I was trying to help, you don’t understand, it wasn’t like that.
Then she saw Natalie looking not angry but tired.
Something in her face gave way.
“I altered access I no longer had a right to use,” Brenda said, voice low but steady. “I approved charges and contract revisions under my son’s name. Mr. Mercer told me it would protect my family’s business. It protected his. And when my daughter-in-law found it, I tried to silence her instead of stopping.”
On the speakerphone, Charlie’s voice cut in sharp and startled.
“Brenda, what the hell are you doing?”

Anna clicked to the first spreadsheet.
The exposure had begun, and this time nobody was under the table.
