Chapter 10 - The Signature Brenda Borrowed

Charlie Mercer did not know Lucas was standing ten feet away when Brenda put him on speaker.

“Brenda, calm down,” Charlie said, his voice smooth even now. “Once Dawson renews, my lender backs off. Then we refinance and everybody’s protected.”

Lucas stepped forward. “Protected from what, Charlie?”

There was a beat of silence, then a click. Call ended.

Brenda lowered the phone slowly. Her lipstick was half worn off. Her condo smelled like old perfume and panic.

Anna arrived twenty minutes later and went through the remaining emails on Brenda’s laptop while Natalie sat at the dining table with both hands wrapped around a mug she wasn’t drinking from.

The truth took shape in pieces.

Mercer Logistics had been drowning for months under tax liens and a commercial note it could not satisfy. Charlie needed a credible transportation client to shore up his lender. Brenda had used her retained access at Dawson Freight to route business to him, approve inflated invoices, and insert revised contract language that tied Dawson Freight’s renewal to Mercer’s existing debt exposure.

She had done it while Lucas was traveling, using his stored e-sign credentials and the family calendar to cover the timing.

The clues that had looked separate now locked together: the strange urgency about the bank meeting, the folder she opened before lunch, the lunch itself scheduled for the exact hours Lucas would be away, the talk about Mercer “keeping it in the family.”

Brenda sat down heavily. “He said it was bridge financing. He said after the renewal, he’d sell the warehouse, pay off the lien, and we could start over somewhere smaller.”

“We?” Natalie asked, hollow-eyed.

Brenda didn’t answer.

Lucas looked at the woman who had packed his lunches, paid his baseball fees, and once worked double shifts at a dental office so he could finish college without quitting the business program.

Then he looked at the same woman who had used his name to pull his company toward another man’s failure.

He had a choice now: keep it quiet a little longer to protect Dawson Freight’s reputation, or drag the truth into the open before it buried them.

He turned to Anna.

“Set the meeting,” he said. “But first I want her to say all of it where Gwen can hear it.”
