Chapter 11 - The Damage That Was Already Moving

They met at Ava’s condo because Gwen refused to step inside the Brookhaven house until Brenda was fully out of it.

When Brenda walked in, Gwen stayed seated at the kitchen table with a pillow tucked behind her back and a bottle of water in front of her. She didn’t raise her voice. She didn’t have to.

Natalie stood by the counter, pale and wrung out. Lucas took the chair across from his mother. Ava stayed in the doorway with her arms crossed, making it clear Brenda was there on sufferance.

Brenda admitted the basics first: the fake approvals, the hidden relationship with Charlie, the promise that the Mercer deal would “stabilize everything.” She admitted she had found Gwen’s note in the folder before the lunch. She admitted she had wanted Lucas to sign before Gwen could explain.

“What she did not plan for,” Gwen said quietly, “was me saying no.”

Brenda’s eyes flickered. “You humiliated me in front of my guests.”

Gwen stared at her. “You dragged me by the hair while I was thirty-two weeks pregnant.”

No one spoke for a moment.

Lucas broke it. “I should’ve cut your access months ago. I should’ve listened when Tasha raised concerns. I should’ve listened when Gwen said living this close to you wasn’t working.” He looked at Gwen, the apology in his face more than in his voice. “I kept telling myself keeping the peace was loyalty.”

Gwen held his gaze. “It wasn’t peace.”

Natalie set the untouched mug down too hard. “And I helped by staying quiet because I needed Mom to keep co-signing my life.”

The truth sat there, ugly and complete, and still nothing about it fixed payroll, bank trust, or the fact that Gwen no longer felt safe around Lucas’s family.

Brenda looked at Lucas with wet, furious eyes. “I never meant to take your house.”

He leaned forward.

“You already put it on the table.”
